Golf Balls
Over recent years, the technology of golf balls has changed dramatically. Every day, golf manufacturers search for new ways to get more distance and better feel for their golf balls so that golfers choose their product. Often, the average golfer will not be able tell much difference between golf balls, but as your skill level improves, it is recommended to use the ball that best suits your game.
Golf Ball History
The history of the technology of golf balls is astounding. The improved technology of the balls is a huge reason why golfers now can hit the ball further than they could in decades past. The first golf ball ever used was made of leather, and continued to evolve to its current state. The balls are now made of plastic on the outside and forms of rubber, silicone and other materials in the core. The United States Golf Association set a maximum weight of 1.62 ounces as a way to regulate the constant changes in technology.
Titleist Golf Balls
Currently, the Titleist ProV1 is the most popular ball amongst golfers on the PGA Tour. Pros such as Padraig Harrington, Steve Stricker, and Kenny Perry all use the ProV1, which has been the ball of choice for a majority of the golfers on the Tour. ProV1s are designed for serious golfers who hope to improve their feel and distance. The balls are a bit pricey at around $50 per dozen, but are recommended by many equipment reviews as the top ball on the market.
Callaway Golf Balls
Callaway is another company that makes a popular top of the line ball. The HX Tour is their top ball and is comparable to Titleist's ProV1 ball. Many top PGA professionals, such as the world's number two player, Phil Mickelson, and other stars like Ernie Els and Rocco Mediate, also use Callaway's HX Tour. The HX Tour balls are not as pricey as some of its competitors, as they usually cost $40 per dozen. If you are looking for a very good golf ball but do not want to break the bank, the HX Tour is probably the best bet.
Nike Golf Balls
Nike's golf products have gone under much scrutiny in years past, but recently their products have received very good reviews. Their top ball, the Nike One Black, has gotten great reviews and is marketed well because the world's best and most famous golfer, Tiger Woods uses it. The ball has fared favorably to the Callaway HX Tour and Titleist ProV1 in recent studies. One drawback to the Nike One Black is it is a bit pricey, at nearly $50 per dozen. Other than the price, the Nike balls are a very good golf ball for advanced golfers.
Golf Ball Considerations
When buying a golf ball, it is important to buy one that you feel comfortable using. Do not play a ball because it works for Tiger Woods; play a ball that feels right for you. Additionally, many amateur golfers cannot feel much or any difference at all between different golf balls. If this is the case, use a cheaper, more durable ball that is not designed for the elite golfers.
